Poezd harakati egri chiziqlari temir yo'llardan foydalanishda va tadqiqot dasturlarida keng qo'llaniladi, masalan, poezdlarning unumdorligini hisoblash, harakatlanish vaqtini baholash, yoqilg'i va elektr energiyasini sarfini baholash, o'tkazish qobiliyatini tahlil qilish, poezdlar harakatini rejalashtirish, yangi marshrutni rejalashtirish, eski marshrutni modernizatsiya qilish va boshqalar. Poezd harakati juda murakkab va ko'plab omillar bilan tartibga solinadi. Natijada, aniq va oqilona harakat egri chizig'ini analitik yondashuvlar yordamida osongina olish murakkab masala hisoblanadi. Bu ko'p vaqt talab qiladigan ish bo'lgani uchun, zamonaviy yondashuv bunday hisob-kitoblarni amalga oshirish uchun poezdning ishlash simulyatorini yaratishni taqozo qiladi. Ko'pgina kompyuter modellari ishlab chiqilgan va ularning ba'zilari tijorat dasturiy ta'minotiga aylangan bo'lsa-da, ularning hisoblash algoritmlari tijorat sirlari bo'lganligi sababli ommaga oshkor etilmaydi. Xususan, ular amaliy qoidalarni hisobga olmasligi mumkin va ularni ma'lum bir temir yo'l tizimlariga joriy etish qiyinlik tug'diradi.
