Интеллектуал ривожланиш бузилишларини эрта аниқлаш тегишли коррекцион чора-тадбирларни ўз вақтида қўллаш имконини беради. Мактабгача ва ундан олдинги ривожланиш даврлари интеллект шаклланишидаги айниқса муҳим давр ҳисобланади. Суҳбат, кузатув, анамнестик маълумотлар таҳлили, шунингдек, ўзида олинаётган маълумотларнинг миқдорий ва сифат таҳлилини мужассам этган психометрик тестлар боланинг нафақат ёш меъёрларига нисбатан интеллектуал ривожланиш даражасини аниқлаш, балки унинг мазкур натижага қай йўл билан келганлиги, унинг потенциали, динамик тавсифи, «яқин ривожланиш ҳудуди», ўзлаштириш тезлиги, мотивацияси, шахсининг хусусиятлари қандайлиги ва бошқаларни тушунишга имкон беради. Умумий ривожланиш кечикиши – моторика, нутқ, мантиқий фикрлаш, ижтимоий-эмоционал ва мослашув табиати каби соҳаларнинг икки ёки ундан ортиғида аҳамиятга молик даражада орқада қолиш билан тавсифланади
