Дерматоглифика XIX асрнинг охирида қўл ва оёқлар кафт қисмлари терисидаги нақшли белгилар асосида инсон ор-ганизмини ўрганувчи фан сифатида пайдо бўлган. Бармоқ нақшларининг учта асосий белгилари фарқланади. Булар ёй, думалоқ ёки сиртмоқ шаклли ҳамда жингалак ёки гажак шаклли нақшлар. Шу билан бирга, турли тадқиқот мақсадлари учун турли белгилар гуруҳи аниқланган ва тасвирланган. Ер юзида иккита бир хил бармоқ шаклли инсонлар учрамайди. Дерматоглифика фани билан шуғулланувчи олимлар бармоқлар устидаги нақшлар инсонларнинг нафақат касалликка мойиллигини белгилашини, балки унинг профессионал сифатлари – унинг характери, темпераменти, жамиятга мосла-шувчанлик турини аниқлашни ҳам ўрганиб олишган.
