The concept and meaning of special knowledge, the form of using special knowledge, the role of an expert and a specialist in the investigation of crimes, their legal status are analyzed in the article. The norms of foreign countries regarding these issues, particularly Germany, Spain and Canada have been analyzed too. According to the results of the analysis, proposals were developed for improving the norms of the national criminal procedure legislation.
