This article describes the genre of the historical novel, the customs of distant antiquity, culture and spiritual value which included intensity to the French literature of XIX century. In general, the author tried to uncover the times drowned in nonexistence. It was also uncovered the views, researchers and writers’ contrary opinions about oeuvre of the creator of historical genre of France Walter Scott.
