THE ROLE OF HUMOUR IN SECOND LANGUAGE ACQUISITION

Humour is not only the purposeful trend of experiences to evoke laughter and provoke amusement, but also it represents information about geographical locality, nations, his-tory, maturity, education, art, culture and traditions. Humour serves for several social functions, involving culture correlation, language acquisition and comprehension. Especially, in foreign language learning process humour facilitates to acquire the language, to improve communica-tion skills, to lose inhibition and to create a warm atmosphere of close relationship between a teacher and language learners. This paper is based on the useful outcomes of humour in the classroom illustrating the English language learning process with the help of a few English jokes and puns.
