Currently, the demand for mineral oils used in engine vehicles and transformers is increasing year by year worldwide. Additionally, a significant portion of used oils is burned as fuel. At present, the contact method is widely used for oil regeneration with the help of adsorbents such as aluminosilicates, zeolites, silica gels, bleaching clays, and others. The existing industrial reprocessing technologies are of great importance in the recycling of used engine and transformer oils. Furthermore, scientists worldwide are conducting research to create long-lasting carbon-based adsorbents for the regeneration of used engine and transformer mineral oils. In this regard, special attention is being paid to determining the physicochemical properties of existing petroleum coke, developing methods for obtaining carbon-based adsorbents from petroleum coke, determining the operational characteristics of adsorbents, analyzing the acid and base numbers of regenerated mineral oils, and developing technologies for regenerating used oils using adsorbents. The article discusses the primary adsorption purification processes of used motor oils, the role of adsorbents, and the degree of purification analyzed by physicochemical methods. As an example, used engine or transformer oil was selected.
