This article analyzes the pedagogical and psychological foundations of forming interpretive thinking in the development of students' reading literacy. The essence of interpretive thinking and its structural components (analytical, synthesizing, evaluative, creative) are revealed. The psychological (L.S.Vygotsky, J.Piaget, J.Bruner, A.N.Leontiev), pedagogical (V.V.Davydov, D.B.Elkonin, M.I.Makhmutov, I.S.Yakimanskaya) and philosophical-hermeneutical (F.Schleiermacher, H.G.Gadamer, M.Bakhtin, Y.Lotman) foundations of interpretive thinking are also highlighted. Based on the analysis of international assessment programs (PISA, PIRLS) and research by local and foreign scientists, the pedagogical conditions for the formation of interpretive thinking are identified.
