This article analyzes the diversity of religious and spiritual values held by the ancient population of Ustrushana. The author outlines the historical development of religious views in the region, beginning with primordial belief systems such as totemism, shamanism, Manichaeism, Zoroastrianism, Buddhism, and Christianity. In particular, the worship of animals and their acceptance as totemic symbols are widely discussed. The depiction of animals such as dogs, wolves, bears, birds, snakes, leopards, mountain goats, horses, oxen, and frogs in religious beliefs and customs is examined through historical and ethnographic evidence. The protective roles of dog and wolf totems, their connection to the human soul, and the recognition of oxen and horses as symbols of prosperity and power are especially highlighted. Special attention is paid to the role of the dog totem in customs related to children and young families, illustrated through expressions such as «dog shirt» and «dog blanket.» The wolf totem, which holds a significant place in the genealogy of Turkic peoples, is also noted for its deep reflection in the culture of early Turkic states and the Ustrushana Afshins. Additionally, the article discusses the connection between the ox totem and the Mahabharata epic, the image of Gopadshah, the social and religious status of horses, and the spiritual functions of other totems, such as mountain goats and frogs, in relation to agriculture, fertility, and protection from evil spirits.
