Archaeology of Uzbekistan

O‘zbekiston arxeologiyasi (Archaeology of Uzbekistan) is an international peer-reviewed scholarly journal devoted to current issues in the archaeology of Uzbekistan and Central Asia, as well as related historical, anthropological and natural-science disciplines.

The journal was founded in 2010 on the basis of the Y. Ghulomov Samarkand Institute of Archaeology. The founder and publisher of the journal is the Y. Ghulomov Samarkand Institute of Archaeology.

The primary aim of the journal is to create a scholarly communication platform for discussing current issues in the archaeology of Uzbekistan and Central Asia, publishing the results of the latest field, theoretical and interdisciplinary research, and developing cooperation between national and international specialists.

The principal objectives of the journal are:

1. to introduce the results of archaeological excavations, surveys and laboratory studies into scholarly circulation;
2. to publish analytical and synthetic studies on archaeology and ancient history;
3. to report the results of international archaeological expeditions and research projects;
4. to promote the development of interdisciplinary methods for studying archaeological heritage;
5. to support early-career scholars and expand professional links between researchers in Uzbekistan and other countries;
6. to ensure a high scholarly and editorial standard of published materials.

The thematic scope of the journal covers the period from the Stone Age to the Late Middle Ages. The journal accepts articles on archaeology, ancient and medieval history, historical geography, anthropology, archaeozoology, archaeobotany, numismatics, epigraphy, restoration and conservation of archaeological sites, digital technologies in archaeology, and other related fields.

The journal is intended for archaeologists, historians, anthropologists, museum professionals, cultural heritage protection specialists, teachers, doctoral students, early-career researchers, and everyone interested in the history and archaeology of Central Asia.

Since 2026, the journal has been published four times a year. Articles are published in Uzbek, Russian and English. Every research article is accompanied by an abstract and keywords in Uzbek, Russian and English.

All manuscripts submitted to the editorial office undergo preliminary editorial screening and mandatory scholarly peer review. Original materials that have not previously been published and are not simultaneously submitted to another publication are accepted for publication. Articles that receive positive reviewers’ reports and are approved by the Editorial Board are published free of charge.

The requirements for manuscript structure and formatting are available in the “Guidelines for Authors” section. Articles are submitted electronically through the “Registration” section on the journal’s official website.

The journal adheres to the principles of open access. The full texts of published articles are freely available in the “Archive” section. Journal materials may be read, downloaded, copied, distributed and used for scholarly and educational purposes, provided that authorship and the source of publication are duly acknowledged. Commercial use of journal materials is not permitted. All published materials are protected by copyright legislation.

The journal is registered with the Agency of Information and Mass Communications under the Administration of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan. State Registration Certificate for a Mass Media Outlet No. 0592 dated 23 December 2022.
