In this article, the novel “The Adventures of Oliver Twist” by C. Dickens is analyzed in the paradigm of Bildungsroman genre. To achieve this aim, the research puts forward the following objectives: to consider literary criticism on the topic of childhood in fiction, reveal the factors that influenced the creation of the child’s image in Victorian literature, also study the concept of personality from the perspective of its development and formation during the flow of plot applying the principle genre features. “Oliver Twist” is defined as an idyllic-cyclical or “partially age-related” invariant of the genre. For the first time the child turns into a central hero in a work of a large epic format, that displays not only the theme of childhood, but also the fate of the child. The child becomes a full-fledged literary image endowed with a rich inner world, a personality capable of representing his historical era. The events, situations and the role of secondary characters that have influenced the transformation of the hero’s character in the period from childhood to adolescence are studied inthe article as well. The novel laid the foundations for “Dickensian Bildungsroman”, such as “David Copperfield” and “Great Expectations”.
