ARTICLE ANNOTATION

quote
This study focuses on analyzing how extremist groups target women on social media platforms. In recent years, the internet has increasingly become a tool for extremists to recruit and radicalize individuals, with growing efforts to create a supportive environment among women. The research examines posts and content aimed at recruiting women and influencing their perceptions on leading social media platforms. A comparative analysis methodology was employed to study posts, hashtags, and visual content across various social networks. The study also explores how gender and patriarchal stereotypes – such as the traditional belief that women are suited for domestic roles while men are leaders – are perpetuated in cyberspace and utilized by extremists to influence women. The findings reveal that extremist groups exploit personal and societal vulnerabilities to recruit women. For instance, they leverage gender-based narratives, foster a sense of "sisterhood," and manipulate women’s psychological needs to expand their influence. The study highlights the importance of promoting digital literacy and equipping users, especially women, with the necessary skills to navigate and protect themselves in the online environment. These skills are crucial in shielding women from the threat of extremism and in supporting the development of countermeasures against extremist influence.
