ARTICLE ANNOTATION

quote
This article examines the life, scholarly activity, and literary legacy of Muhammad Abid al-Sindi (d. 1257/1841), a distinguished 13th-century Hijri scholar renowned for his profound expertise in Hadith, Fiqh, and Sufism. A descendant of the Companion Abu Ayyub al-Ansari, al-Sindi was born in the Sind region and showed a deep interest in knowledge from an early age. He first studied under his grandfather, father, and uncle, and later continued his education in Yemen under eminent scholars such as Imam al-Shawkani, Shaykh al-Fullani, and Shaykh al-San‘ani. Dedicating most of his life to learning and teaching, he traveled extensively across India, Yemen, the Hijaz, and Egypt, producing dozens of works in Hadith, jurisprudence, exegesis, mysticism, logic, and medicine. Known in his time as “the Shawkani of India”, al-Sindi authored well-known treatises such as Minhat al-Bari, Mawahib al-Latifa, and Tawali‘ al-Anwar, which earned him great recognition among scholars. The article provides an analytical overview of his perseverance, scholarly methodology, teachers, disciples, and the thematic directions of his writings. It also discusses his role in the intellectual and spiritual life of his era and his contribution to the development of Islamic sciences. The findings highlight Muhammad Abid al-Sindi’s place among the encyclopedic scholars of the Muslim world and demonstrate his lasting influence on the continuity of traditional Islamic scholarship.
