This article is dedicated to the history of the emergence of natural silk. The history of the development of cocoon weaving and silk weaving in China, Central Asia, and other regions is described. It is known that silk is the product of the silkworm's life activity, which spins a strong cocoon around itself. There are many legends about the question of who first came up with the idea of unwinding this cocoon and spinning thread from it, and then bringing it to the state of fabric. It is described as having revealed a secret that had been kept strictly confidential for a long time. In ancient times, silk symbolized power, wealth, and power - and that's not surprising! Silk was valued literally by the weight of gold: the weight of silk was given the same weight of gold. The establishment of sericulture and silk weaving, as well as its flourishing in Central Asia, is linked to the Great Silk Road. At this time, caravan trade flourished along the Great Silk Road, with Samarkand, Bukhara, and Fergana being key centers. Information from written sources, historical and ethnographic materials is analyzed and systematized. It should be noted that Uzbekistan occupies a significant place in the world in terms of the largest producer of silk fibers; the share of Uzbekistan among the CIS countries in the total volume of silk production is 85%, as well as the world leader in production per capita. An analysis of the economic development of sericulture in Japan, China, and other countries engaged in sericulture is presented.
