This article discusses the method of determining the design
characteristics of mudflows. The issues of volumes of previously passed mudflows,
methods of their identification are considered. One of them is topographic survey in
combination with sinking of pits, drilling or other types of determination of the sediment
capacity of each generation. If these methods do not allow to determine the volume of

the mudflow in a direct way (removal of mudflow deposits into a large watercourse,
difficulties in isolating each generation of mudflow, erosion of the removal cone, etc.),
then an analytical method can be applied. The article considers the issue of the size of
the mudflow - its estimated (maximum) width and depth - necessary for the correct
determination of the dimensions of the mudflow structures, as well as for the
calculation of the flow rate. The mudflow velocity, which is difficult to directly measure
during the flow, is still determined using analytical formulas
