This article reviews the network requirements for different applications and identifies the appropriate protocols that can be used at different system levels. In addition, network architectures for five different smart city systems are presented. Consequently, the design and development of efficient network, communication protocols and architectures to meet the growing needs of various important and rapidly developing smart city applications and services are considered.
