ARTICLE ANNOTATION

quote
Lakes and their inherent hydrological processes serve as vital indicators of global ecological and climatic shifts. Variations in lake water levels and volumes are closely linked not only to natural factors (precipitation, evaporation, and temperature regimes) but also to anthropogenic activities. In this context, regular monitoring of water surface area dynamics is critical for effective water resource management, the refinement of regional climate models, and the assessment of environmental risks. In this study, changes in the surface area of Lake Sarykamysh, located on the border of Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan, were analyzed for the period 2002–2024 based on MODIS satellite data. The analysis results revealed that the water surface area has been expanding at an average rate of +7.6 km²/year. Monitoring conducted using MODIS data enables a detailed analysis of the hydrological regime of Lake Sarykamysh. This establishes a reliable scientific foundation for the long-term forecasting of morphometric parameters and contributes to the formulation of sustainable water management strategies in the Aral Sea region.
