ARTICLE ANNOTATION

quote
The article addresses a fundamental issue in the study of Islamic history – the fact that most historical sources and texts were written relatively late, primarily between the 8th and 12th centuries, well after the events of the 7th century. The events of the 7th century were transmitted orally by direct witnesses and later transformed into literary accounts in the 8th century. However, the original works of early traditional historians have not survived to the present day. Later historians based their writings on these transmitted reports, which, despite their importance, often reflect the religious and subjective interpretations of scholars and members of specific religious groups. Therefore, it is essential to consider the religious affiliation and social background of the authors when analyzing such sources. The article further explores how the rise of Shi‘ism and Kharijism, the Mihna (inquisition) under the Abbasids, and ideological divisions within Islam were reflected in historical narratives. It also highlights how some works were written under political or ideological pressure, including flattering portrayals of sultans, judges, and other elites. Consequently, the article emphasizes the importance of studying medieval historians and their works within their respective religious, political, and ideological contexts in future research.
