The Role of «Sahih Muslim» in the Science of Hadith

This article examines Sahih Muslim, one of the most authoritative collections in the field of Hadith sciences, compiled by Imam Muslim. It explores the process of the compilation, the methods employed to ensure the authenticity of the Hadiths included, and the scholarly and source-critical value of the work’s introduction (Muqaddimah). The collection was compiled after fifteen years of rigorous research and selection from nearly 300,000 narrations. In addition to the Hadiths themselves, the work reflects a detailed framework of conditions and criteria established for authenticating narrations. The article discusses the differing scholarly opinions concerning the number of Hadiths in Sahih Muslim–ranging from 3,033 unique narrations to between 7,515 and 12,000 including repetitions–and addresses the structure and classification of the chapters. The Muqaddimah is given particular attention for its methodological insights, including techniques for distinguishing sound Hadiths from weak ones, standards for evaluating transmitters, and conditions for the acceptance of Hadith. Furthermore, the article introduces Imam Muslim’s other significant works–al-Asami wa-l-Kuna, at-Tamyiz, Rijal ʿUrwa ibn az-Zubayr, al-Munfaridat wa-l-Wuḥdan, and at-Ṭabaqat–highlighting their content, historical context, and methodological relevance within Hadith scholarship. A key focus of the study is the comparative analysis between Sahih Muslim and other Hadith collections, aiming to underscore the scientific and scholarly value of Imam Muslim’s compilation. The article concludes by thoroughly discussing Imam Muslim’s contributions to the science of Hadith and the significance of Sahih Muslim as a vital source for researchers and scholars.
