This article analyzes the emergence, historical formation, and activities of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem under various political authorities. In particular, it examines the elevation of the Church to patriarchal status, the significance of the Council of Chalcedon in this process, and the transformation of Jerusalem into a major Christian pilgrimage center during the Byzantine period. The study also explores the legal status, religious authority, and role concerning holy sites of the Patriarchate under Byzantine rule, the Arab Caliphate, the Crusades, the Mamluks, and the Ottoman Empire.
