This article examines the role of the imams of qirāʾāt in the formation and development of the science of Qur’anic readings. It analyzes the historical transition from the seven canonical readings to the system of ten qirāʾāt, highlighting the methodological principles and scholarly motivations behind their standardization. The study also clarifies the conceptual distinctions between qirāʾa, riwāya, and ṭarīq, and outlines the criteria for the acceptance of sound readings, including reliable chains of transmission (isnād), conformity with the ʿUthmānic codex, and compliance with Arabic grammatical norms. Drawing on classical sources, the article explores the scholarly legacy of the ten imams of qirāʾāt and their enduring contribution to the preservation and transmission of the Qur’anic text.
