This article analyzes the essence of the concept of "competence" in the field of language education, its types, and its significance in the process of foreign language teaching. It highlights the stages of development of the concept of competence in linguistics and pedagogy, as well as the theoretical views of scholars such as N. Chomsky, D. Hymes, M. Canale, and M. Swain. Types of competence such as linguistic, communicative, sociolinguistic, pragmatic, strategic, discourse, and sociocultural competence are examined separately. The article presents conclusions on the role of the competence-based approach in modern language teaching methodology and ways of its practical implementation.
