ARTICLE ANNOTATION

quote
The article examines the artistic role of the dream motif in Franz Kafka's short prose through a comparison of “A Dream” and “A Country Doctor.” The study aims to distinguish a story that is directly presented as a dream from narration that is not called a dream but follows a dreamlike logic. Analysis of text structure, meaning, motifs, and the two stories in comparison shows that “A Dream” creates a dreamlike quality through an explicit dream frame, a space that becomes a center of meaning, and the motif of writing. In “A Country Doctor,” the dreamlike effect is created by broken cause-and-effect links, unusual changes in distance, the hero's reduced ability to act independently, and the calm description of impossible events. The study concludes that the dream motif in Kafka is not an isolated symbol but an important artistic device that shapes plot, images, and meaning.
