ARTICLE ANNOTATION

quote
This article analyzes the life, scholarly activity, and intellectual legacy of Muhammad Zahid al-Kawthari (1879–1952), one of the prominent representatives of the late Hanafi jurisprudential tradition, and his role in contemporary Islamic studies. The research examines al-Kawthari’s works on fiqh, usul al-fiqh, kalam, hadith, and source studies, focusing on their methodological features and their influence on the further development of the Hanafi school. Zahid al-Kawthari emphasized the importance of ijtihad in religious thought, seeking to harmonize Islamic law with the requirements of his era and modern social realities. His works — Maqalāt, al-Tanbīh al-Wāqi‘āt, and al-Ḥāwī fī Tarājim al-Ḥanafiyya — are significant not only for fiqh but also for strengthening the methodological foundations of Islamic intellectual tradition. In his scholarship, al-Kawthari explored the interconnection between fiqh and kalam, the philosophical basis of rational religious thought, and new principles of source criticism. The study applies historical-comparative, content analysis, and source-based methods. The findings indicate that al-Kawthari successfully combined traditional scholarly schools with innovative reasoning, consistently emphasized the necessity of keeping the gate of ijtihad open, and defended the independence of Islamic thought. His scholarly legacy remains one of the essential sources for the study of Hanafi methodology, the history of Islamic thought, and the intellectual and spiritual renewal of the Muslim world.
