The participation of female art historians played an important role in the large-scale folklore expeditions launched in the 20th century with the goal of collecting, studying, and preserving the centuries-old musical heritage of the Uzbek people for future generations. In particular, expeditions were organized to the Fergana Valley, Bukhara, and Khiva to document the oral creative traditions of the people. Alongside Elena Romanovskaya, the Uzbek art historian Khafiya Mukhammedova also took part in these musical expeditions. Later, Karima Olimbaeva joined the team as well. As a result of this meticulous fieldwork, various examples of folk oral art — widely practiced among women and children at the time — were recorded on magnetic tapes and transcribed into musical notation.
