This article emphasizes that the view that Maturidi prioritized reason over narration stems from a lack of deep knowledge of the foundations of Maturidism. It highlights the distinct methodological approach employed in Ta’wilat Ahl al-Sunna regarding the use of rational reasoning. It is explained that the scholar used reasoning to support and substantiate textual arguments, while remaining within its boundaries. Furthermore, it is noted that Maturidi aimed to comprehensively justify the creed of Ahlis Sunna, striving to provide conclusive evidence for every doctrinal issue in Sunni theology. In his debates with representatives of rationalist schools of thought, such as the Mu‘tazilites and atheists, who prioritized reason as the main criterion, he frequently resorted to logic and rational arguments to refute their misconceptions. When engaging in intellectual debates with the Mu‘tazilites, he not only challenged them on religious proofs but also defeated them in terms of logical and rational argumentation. As a result of these efforts, Maturidi demonstrated in practice that the creed of Ahl al-Sunna, in terms of logical substantiation, was superior to the doctrines of other sects. The article also analyzes how he effectively proved that there is no inherent connection between material progress, scientific achievements, and atheistic beliefs.
